Kragujevac Chooses Smarter Solutions: Focus on Parking and Public Transport
In the heart of Šumadija, work continues on the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). The third stakeholder workshop, held on April 8, 2026, at the City Hall, brought together key actors to jointly define concrete measures for the future of transport in Kragujevac.
The Parking Challenge
One of the primary topics was parking policy, which directly affects the daily lives of citizens. Participants identified critical pressure points such as the University Clinical Center, the city administration area, and the city center.
Key proposed responses to these issues include:
- Park-and-Ride System: Introducing a system that allows parking on the outskirts of the city and transitioning to public transport was evaluated as the best long-term solution.
- Stricter Control: Implementing a better system of fines for illegal parking and revising parking ticket prices.
- New Regulation: Introducing preferential parking regimes and „shared space“ models in zones under the highest pressure from car traffic.
Modernizing Public Transport
Public transport was recognized as a pillar of mobility, but significant improvements are necessary to make it the first choice for citizens.
- Stop Infrastructure: It was emphasized that many bus stops are currently in poor condition; their refurbishment and new design are considered „must“ measures to attract passengers.
- Connectivity: The policy must be viewed integrally, ensuring that urban, suburban, and regional lines are interconnected and compatible.
From Recreation to Daily Commute
Kragujevac currently has a cycling lane only in the Great Park, limiting cycling primarily to recreation. Experts proposed a pilot project in Karađorđeva Street to connect the park with the old city core, introducing the bicycle as a legitimate means of transport in the center.
A Shared Vision for a Greener City
Organized by UN-Habitat with the participation of city representatives and Academy Šumadija, this workshop demonstrated that solutions lie in inclusive design, urban greenery, and innovative management models.
The next steps lead toward finalising the measures that will make Kragujevac more accessible, safer, and a more pleasant place to live for all its residents.
